About the project
The client
Hemie is a Swedish proptech startup that helps people rent and exchange homes. Their unique algorithm connects three landlords in one exchange chain, and BankID verification ensures all deals are safe and legally compliant.

The impact
Finding a rental apartment in Sweden is extremely difficult due to long waiting lists. To address this, the law allows tenants to swap apartments with landlord approval. Hemie simplifies and scales this process, helping people move more freely.

The project's background
We first teamed up with Hemie to turn around their mobile apps after a rocky start with another vendor. With that success behind us, we moved forward to design and develop the web app – now fully live across 6 major cities and expanding further.
THE GOALS
🏡Address housing shortage
Reduce the difficulty of finding rental apartments despite long waiting lists.
🎯Deliver web app and admin panel
🗂️Design product architecture
🤝Support multi-party exchanges
💰Establish monetization
🎨Develop UX/UI design

🚀Plan phased launch
The Solution
Why?
In Sweden, finding a rental apartment can take years due to limited availability. In Stockholm, the average wait is 10 years, and up to 25 in the city center. With tenants rarely moving out, the market stays locked, and mobility is low.
To ease this, Swedish law allows legal apartment swaps with landlord approval, giving people a way to move without waiting in line for years. So, Hemie is, quite literally, actively transforming the rental industry by offering their solution.

What?
Our collaboration resulted in the web app development featuring both a user interface and an admin panel. The platform uses a familiar matching algorithm: your ideal apartment, house, or room must find the perfect match – you are either interested, or not.
The platform launched first in Sweden’s largest cities, where demand is highest, allowing us to gather valuable user feedback and plan a controlled, data-driven local level expansion – gradually scaling up with growing traction and future investment support.

How?
We chose React for its speed, flexibility, and component-based architecture: since the platform functions as a large-scale real estate marketplace with thousands of listings and high-resolution images, frontend efficiency was critical.
React’s modular design enables rapid development and easy maintenance of real-time updates. This approach ensures Hemie scales reliably as it expands across all over the country and allows for fast rollout of new features with time.

Main Feature
In Sweden, apartment swaps are legally allowed in specific situations and require landlord approval. Common reasons include:

Changed family circumstances
Moving in together, expecting a child, or separating.

Closer to work or studies
Relocating for a new job or education.

Improved living conditions
Moving to a larger or more modern apartment.

Changed finances
Lower income due to illness, unemployment, or retirement.

When you submit your exchange application, you also have to attach proof documents so that your request can be approved.
Hemie offers 3 types of rental property exchange:
How three-party exchange works 🧐

Person A in Stockholm wants a smaller apartment in Gothenburg.

Person B in Gothenburg wants a bigger place in Malmö.

Person C in Malmö wants a medium apartment in Stockholm.
A can’t swap directly with B, but when C joins, all three can exchange apartments at once, solving everyone’s needs. This chain makes finding a perfect match much easier.

Main focus
Design
We designed a clean, intuitive interface with familiar patterns that make navigating complex apartment exchanges – including three-party swaps – easy and natural. Every critical state, animation and block was designed to guide users and reduce friction.

Security & Payments
Hemie supports multiple payment methods – Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank cards, and Klarna (including Klarna credit). To ensure secure transactions, Hemie uses BankID for identity verification. User data is protected through encrypted exchange and GDPR-compliant storage.

Monetization
The company offers two subscription options: Hemie Free with basic features, and Hemie Premium with advanced benefits like unlimited interest markers, early messaging and Boost discounts.
